Mencermati sejarah Indonesia melalui video menjadi satu gerakan penting. Sejarah memang berpihak pada pemenang. Kenyataan dibentuk sedemikian rupa sesuai kehendak penguasa. Dan kelahiran video telah membuat kita berpikir ulang untuk memposisikan diri dalam pergulatan zaman. Bertentangan dengan teknologi seluloid yang menghasilkan gambaran dunia homogen, video menandai geliat demokratisasi dunia, sebuah teknologi pembebas.

Tapi, terlepas dari sifat inherennya yang demokratis, teknologi video di era analog ternyata dipakai sebagai alat pendukung represi kekuasaan Orde Baru. Namun, kemampuan teknologi ini untuk merambah rumah-rumah terjauh di pelosok-pelosok desa membuat pemerintah berkuasa pada masa itu mewaspadai kehadirannya. Bahkan, sebuah seminar pertahanan dan keamanan pun digelar untuk mengantisipasi selusup demokratisasi yang melekat pada teknologi video.

Revolusi teknologi video terjadi di era digital, yang merupakan transisi kekuasaan rezim Orde Baru ke Orde Reformasi. Setiap orang kini dengan mudahnya memiliki alat perekam pribadi, menghasilkan berbagai karya yang menarik untuk dikaji. Tak ayal kekuatan video di era ini semakin bertambah luar biasa. Dengan teknologi digital kita disuguhi berbagai hal nyaris tanpa sensor, sampai-sampai yang bisa kita lakukan adalah melakukan sensor-diri. Bagai dua sisi mata uang, sofistikasi teknologi selalu seiring dengan sofistikasi kejahatan. Melalui video kita mengetahui berbagai hal seperti perang, aksi teror, berita-berita keseharian, bahkan rekaman orang-orang biasa. Fenomena video telepon genggam, internet (youtube, situs-situs porno dan lain-lain) patut dicermati sebagai gerak sejarah dunia yang kita tinggali sekarang. Melalui video, sejarah Indonesia pun dapat dimaknai kembali

Berdasarkan pemikiran itu, Forum Lenteng melaksanakan riset Videobase, yang bertujuan untuk merekam sejarah Indonesia selama kurang lebih 50 tahun terakhir. Bermula dari tayangan pertama TVRI Agustus 1962, serta ditetapkannya era analog (rezim otoritarian Soeharto), di mana teknologi dijadikan sarana pendukung represi kekuasaan, hingga kemunculan era digital (rezim Reformasi), ketika akses untuk memiliki teknologi begitu mudah dan murah. Video kemudian menjadi semacam lekatan sosial yang membentuk sejarah. Sambungan-sambungan itu membentuk Video-Sosial-Historia, yang digunakan sebagai tema pameran riset Videobase kali ini. Tema tersebut berhubungan dengan kemampuan teknologi video untuk menyentuh relung-relung batin massa dan membentuk sejarahnya sendiri. Dalam pameran ini, akan ditampilkan karya-karya yang menandai gerak sejarah Indonesia seperti berita TVRI pilihan, rekaman aksi teror, video rekaman aktivitas pribadi serta video-video yang diunduh dari situs internet youtube. Pameran ini juga menampilkan karya-karya video Forum Lenteng selama lima tahun terakhir, di mana karya-karya ini mewakili Indonesia, sebagai sebuah negara, dengan banyaknya karya yang diputar baik nasional maupun internasional.

Looking the history of Indonesia through video become one important movement. History is on the winning side. The reality was established according to such authorities will. And the birth of video have made us think back to position ourself in the struggle of the age. Celluloid technology resulted a homogenous picture of the world, while video marks an extended democratization to the world; a liberator technology.

However, irrespective to its inherent democratic nature, video technology in the era of analog was used as a supporting means for repression of the New Order regime. Nevertheless, the ability of this technology for reach in the farthest corners of Indonesia has made the government in power at that time became cautious. In fact, a defense and security seminar was held to inform the danger of video technology.

Then the digital era come for revolution. Everyone is now easily have a personal video recorder, which produces a variety of interesting works. Surefire strength video in this era grew extraordinarily. Digital technology provides us with things almost without censors, so that all we can do is to self-censorship. Like two sides of the coin, sophistication of technology is always in line with the sophistication of crime. Through the video we find out things such as war, terror actions, daily news, even recordings of the ordinary. Video handphone phenomenon, internet (youtube, porn sites and others) should be analyze carefully as the movement of history of the world we live in today. Through video, the history of Indonesia may well be redefined.

Based on that reasoning, Forum Lenteng conducting Videobase research, which aims to record the history of Indonesia in 50 years or so. Starting from the first launch of TVRI on August 1962, and the uprising of analog era (Soeharto’s authoritarian regime), where technology being used to support repression of power, until the occurrence of the digital era (Reform Order regime), while having access to technology so cheap and easy. Video became a kind of coherence that form the social history. Those connections establishing Video-Social-Historia, which is used as a tagline in this Videobase research exhibition. The theme related to the ability of video technology to touch the inner niche of the mass and thus create their own history. This exhibition will display works that mark the movement of Indonesia history, such as news from TVRI, terror action recordings, personal videos and videos which downloaded from internet sites such as youtube. This exhibition will also displays videoworks of Forum Lenteng during the last five years, in which the works represent Indonesia as a country, with many works has been screened both nationally and internationally.
